He then pledged to catch up within three months. Training alongside soldiers and guided by specialists, he quickly improved and later achieved first place among officers in a semiannual assessment.
Private Ma Yubin initially struggled with physical fitness and felt discouraged. Zhang Fanggang encouraged him to challenge himself and trained alongside him. By year’s end, Ma was named an “Outstanding Soldier” and promoted to assistant squad leader. Specialist recruit Bai Jinlong mastered over a thousand methods of analyzing toxic and hazardous substances within six months and became a technical backbone of the company.
In the past five years, the Second Company has provided 26 trained personnel to other units.
Dare to Take Responsibility: Step Forward When Tasks Arise
“The Second Company cannot afford to lose; it can only win.” This phrase reflects the unit’s strong sense of responsibility. Whenever urgent and difficult tasks arise, the soldiers repeat it.
In March 2012, during an assessment, the company ranked first overall but lagged in some individual events. The Party branch set a goal: every subject must be excellent, and every individual must pass. They developed 13 types of simulation tools and five training methods, which were later promoted across the regiment. By the end of the year, they broke eight regimental records.
As a nuclear, biological, and chemical emergency response unit, the company surveyed hazard sources across northwest China and developed a database system and distribution map to support rapid rescue operations.
On April 17, 2011, after an oil tanker accident in Lanzhou, the company activated its emergency response mechanism and completed preparations within 10 minutes, saving 30 minutes compared to previous response times. In August 2008, during the major mudslide disaster in Zhouqu, Gansu, the company marched 400 kilometers and became the first rescue unit to arrive, rescuing six survivors and disinfecting over 10,000 people.
Dare to Draw the Sword: Train as You Fight
During one training session, the company commander halted the use of simulated agents and insisted on real toxic agents.
“If chemical defense troops do not train with real toxic agents, how will they fight in the future?” the Party branch concluded that realistic training must be implemented in every step.
“Participating in an assessment feels like fighting a real battle,” said squad leader Li Zebing. The company conducted integrated training involving a 5-kilometer armed cross-country run, live-agent detection, and tactical exercises. Soldiers developed a “three-step method” for identifying toxic agents, significantly reducing detection time.
To eliminate superficial training, the company organized demonstrations of key subjects such as detection and large-scale decontamination, and emphasized night operations and coordinated team training. They also developed over 40 portable water testing kits and field collection devices to improve operations in deserts and remote areas.
In a recent comprehensive tactical exercise under realistic conditions, chemical defense units conducted maneuvers while engaging simulated opposing forces, testing capabilities in command transitions, emergency response, and chemical accident handling across 17 operational subjects.
