Announcement on the progress of the Xiamen gathering case (February 2022) concerning suppression of human rights

Dear Sir/Madam:
Thank you for your attention to the 1226 Xiamen Gathering Case! Following the progress report on January 31, 2022, the following is the progress of the case during February 2022.
On February 21, lawyer Peng Jian met with Ding Jiaxi by video, but was interrupted halfway through the meeting, saying that the equipment was occupied and ended in a hurry. It was known that Jiaxi is calm and optimistic. The living conditions in the detention center still do not follow the regulations and have not improved. Jiaxi said that the director of the detention center recently went to see him and recorded his questions about the detention center's diet, ventilation, hygiene and other aspects, but he did not promise to improve it. During this meeting, Jiaxi continued to emphasize the requirement for witnesses to appear in court.

On February 17, lawyer Fang Xiangui, the second defense lawyer re-entrusted by Xu Zhiyong's family, met with Xu Zhiyong via video , and learned that Zhiyong was in a good state of mind, adhered to his beliefs, and remained optimistic. The court also does not allow lawyer Fang to copy the dossier. For this reason, lawyer Fang requests the court to clarify: 1) those dossiers that are classified; 2) the agency or department that has determined that they are classified; 3) what is the legal basis for the definition of classifieds? At present,  no court response has yet been received by lawyer Fang.

Due to the epidemic prevention and control and personal reasons of the lawyer, Chang Weiping's lawyer was unable to meet Chang Weiping in February, and he did not answer the phone inquiries about the progress of the case. Therefore, like last month, Chang Weiping's defense lawyer and family had no news of Chang Weiping.

On February 17, lawyer Li Guobei met with Li Qiaochu via video, and learned that Qiaochu's condition was still very serious. The doctor added drugs for the treatment of auditory hallucinations. Although the auditory hallucinations were relieved slightly, the side effects of the drugs were very serious, leading to amenorrhea and puffiness. Li Qiaochu's family was very anxious, and re-applied for bail pending trial based on Qiaochu's condition. The Linyi City Procuratorate verbally informed that the application had been rejected, and informed that Li Qiaochu had been prosecuted to the court on February 28.

On February 1, the British Guardian published an article exposing that the authorities violated their own constitution and self-proclaimed democracy, arbitrarily used charges of endangering national security, feared to create the Xiamen party case, violated the basic human rights of citizens, and suppressed the peaceful and rational democratic demands of the people.

On February 3, the U.S. Congressional China Committee held a hearing on the theme of "Beijing Olympic Games and Human Rights Suppression". On behalf of the families of the Xiamen Party case, I told members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives that the authorities played with the law and created the Xiamen Party case for no reason. Law-abiding citizens committed arbitrary disappearances, tortured confessions, ill-treatment, deprivation of basic human rights, and at the same time violated the right of defense lawyers to practice shamelessly.

From February 7th to 10th, the International Service for Human Rights held four teleconferences with the British Human Rights Ambassador, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Disappearances, and the UN permanent diplomats in Geneva to update the progress of the case and call for international attention.

On February 15, the US embassy in China issued a statement on the second anniversary of Xu Zhiyong's innocent detention to call on the Chinese government to fulfill its commitments when it signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, stop suppressing human rights and human rights lawyers. The German and French embassies in China also expressed public concern and support for Chinese lawyers and human rights defenders through their official Weibo accounts, and called for the immediate release of all peaceful and rational human rights defenders.

On February 22, the human rights organization CHRD organized a discussion forum on Twitter to discuss the Olympics and human rights. The Xiamen Gathering Case, as a typical case of Chinese human rights defenders being severely violated , attracted attention.

Through this letter, I thank you for your attention, appeal and support to the 1226 Xiamen Gathering Case so far, and I hope you will continue to pay attention.

The four victims of the 1226 Xiamen Gathering case continue to demand that the Chinese government stop persecuting peaceful human rights activists and stop the CCP authorities from continuing to brazenly violate international law and international human rights conventions.

Best regards!
